Allison* is homeless, lives in a tent and comes to GraceWorks occasionally to get food. She drives for DoorDash as often she can to survive. Earlier this month, she came into the GraceWorks for food again, saying lately she had been eating nothing but pretzels.
Allison said proudly she hopes this will be her last trip to our Food Pantry. She had just been offered her dream job as an activity director for an eldercare center.
GraceWorks volunteers put together a couple of bags of food to get her through until her first paycheck. She opened one of the bags and spied a deli sandwich.
“I’m going to eat this right now!” she said. “I get to have lunch!”
As Allison left, she said she plans to give back to GraceWorks when she is able.
GraceWorks’ Food program gives not only critical nutrition but also encouragement, hope for the future and the realization that others care.
Food is GraceWorks’ most requested service. GraceWorks gives food to anyone, regardless of residence. Each family receives a shopping cart full of food, with a retail value of $425. Donations allow GraceWorks to fill the cart for $42.
Williamson County alone had 21,990 food-insecure Neighbors in 2022, reports Feeding America’s latest number available. Only 20% of them are eligible for food stamps. The need is real, and many of our Neighbors would go hungry without the generosity of our donors.
