Poverty grinds down the soul and the mind.

To better serve the Neighbors affected emotionally and mentally by their situations, GraceWorks is blessed to have discounted sessions offered by The Refuge Center for Counseling. Neighbors pay $5 per session.

Such a person was Geraldine*, who despite having other needs, first asked for help writing out her prescription names before a doctor’s appointment. Medical conditions and mental health issues had wrecked her handwriting.

Stephanie, the GraceWorker who helped with her request, soon learned how deeply Geraldine’s poor self-image went.

She was extremely self-conscious about her physical and mental conditions, which had been exacerbated by her parents telling her she was a “mistake.” Her adult son has special needs and lives with her. She has experienced great losses in her life.

After the list of prescriptions was completed, Stephanie asked Geraldine what she thought God of her.

She dissolved in tears and said, “He thinks I’m a terrible person because I am not a good mother.”

Stephanie gently pointed out how much God loves her and that she was created on purpose. She reminded her of Isaiah 43:1 where God tells us, “I have called you by name. You are mine.”

The two women prayed together, and Stephanie arranged for her to have affordable counseling through our partnership at the Refuge CenterShe also helped her make a food appointment for the GraceWorks Pantry.

Just another example of how your support makes the Support of our Food, Shelter and Support programs tangible for people like Geraldine!
