One of our staff members shared this powerful neighbor story:
A neighbor visited us one morning to request a furniture voucher. I met with her in a private room because she’s been known to be rude with our staff.
She was defensive from the beginning, and it almost seemed like I couldn’t get a word out without her interrupting me. She said she doesn’t like coming to GraceWorks because she’s embarrassed that she needs to ask for help, but she also doesn’t know what else to do because she’s so tired. She’s a widow, her son is autistic, and her daughter is about to start college.
In that moment, I felt that all I needed to do was listen. I didn’t say anything to her, and that allowed her the space to cry, vent, and be upset.
As I offered her tissues, I realized that what she truly needed was just to sit. She needed to breathe. She needed to cry. She needed someone to listen. I didn’t need to say a word.
And something wonderful happened: I felt her experience God’s peace. Her anger and frustration melted away, her demeanor changed, and she told me she felt seen and heard.
I offered her some resources because she shared details about her current situation, and she recognized that because she has so much going on, she doesn’t have the best attitude.
She said she was grateful for us and for GraceWorks and that we’ve helped her tremendously throughout the years.
I also referred her to the Human Flourishing Initiative, and she said, “Thank you. I believe that God is going to turn this around, and I just need to get out of the way. I have been stagnant for years and need help.”
