A few weeks ago, our Food Pantry and Thrift Store were in full swing despite heavy rain showers. After shopping in our Food Pantry, one of our neighbors came back inside asking for help because her car wouldn’t start.
Two team members brought jumper cables to help get her car running. As we were getting things set up, a Thrift Store customer pulled into the next parking spot and offered to help.
He got her car started, and after evaluating the battery, explained that she needed to buy a new one immediately.
He saw the dismay on her face and asked, “Do you have the money to buy a new battery?”
She said, “No . . . not today.”
He opened his wallet and started silently counting through bills. As she realized what he was doing, she tearfully asked, “Really?”
He handed her some money and said, “This is how much the new battery should cost you at Walmart. You need to go there right away without stopping anywhere.”
With a look of disbelief on her face, she nodded and said, “Thank you so much!”
This was a true “neighbors serving neighbors” moment!
