GraceWorks Neighbor Story: A Lifeline for Seasonal Workers in Crisis

Seasonal work is great for outdoors people, but it can put its workers in a hard place.

Jason found himself in such a place last month. Widowed and a father of two, Jason had been able to piece together a living through his lawn-mowing business in warm weather and part-time work in a local fast-food restaurant when temperatures were too low for grass to grow.

Just as the growing season drew closer, Jason’s mower broke down. He was already near the end of his savings, and the repair expense took care of the rest.

At a small group gathering at church, he requested prayers for his situation, but he wasn’t expecting it would be answered so quickly. After the meeting, a group member advised him to check out GraceWorks.

A little embarrassed but with no choice, Jason followed his friend’s counsel. He spilled out his story and his desperation to a GraceWorker volunteer. The volunteer arranged for him to receive a shopping cart full of food and took care of his upcoming rent.

“I had no idea there’s this kind of help available, and it was so fast,” he said. “I didn’t know what to expect, but this is beyond my dreams. An hour after I went through the door, I had food for my kids and no worries about my rent. I am beyond grateful.”
