GraceWorks does many big things, such as providing monthly shopping carts full of food, helping with a family’s rent, and paying off an overdue utility bill before disconnection.
But GraceWorks staff and volunteers do many little things that make a family’s experience at GraceWorks a dignified and compassionate one.
Last month, single mom Patti brought her 4-year-old son, Michael, to GraceWorks to get groceries from the Food Pantry. She had found Christmas gifts for her son at The Manger in December and learned that they were eligible to receive monthly food when needed.
Michael soon became too helpful in grabbing items to fill the cart. And, in 4-year-old fashion, he became quite upset when his mother stopped his fun.
A GraceWorks volunteer saw the situation and offered Michael a small bag of Cheez-It crackers to slow his tears and keep his hands busy.
Patti beamed and said, “Oh, those are his favorite! Thank you very much!” Michael broke into giggles and jumped up and down while Patti opened the bag for him.
Michael followed his mother through the pantry, repeating “Thank you very much” over and over.
GraceWorks volunteers do an amazing job making our neighbors feel comfortable and cared for while they shop. For this neighbor, visiting our food pantry was not only free of shame, but full of fun.
