A few days after Andrew started a new job, his son Edward attempted suicide. After his son was released from the hospital, Andrew realized he had to leave his job and stay home with him.
Edward isn’t Andrew’s biological son. Edward and his two siblings are the biological children of Andrew’s ex-girlfriend who abandoned them a few years ago. Andrew decided to keep the children together instead of turning them over to the state for an unknown future and a possible separation.
Andrew’s only income is Social Security. His oldest daughter gives Andrew part of her paycheck each month, but there still wasn’t enough to pay the household expenses. Andrew can’t get child support from the children’s mother because she is in and out of jail and difficult to locate.
Andrew discovered GraceWorks provides rent assistance for eligible families, and he decided to seek help.
After hearing his story about taking on responsibilities out of love, but that put him in a dire situation, a GraceWorks staff member wrote a check for the balance of his rent payment. He was offered food monthly from the GraceWorks Food Pantry and told of other available help, such as utility assistance and vouchers to our Thrift Store.
“Thank you so much,” he said. “This is the miracle I needed.”
