She lost her job about the same time her husband of 15 years unexpectedly filed divorce papers. She lost her home because her name was not on the house mortgage. She has found another job that she loves but the pay is considerably less. She has custody of their 10-year-old daughter two weeks a month and pays child support for the other two weeks.
Needing housing quickly, she was pressured by her ex-husband to rent a house she could not afford because he didn’t want their daughter to live in an apartment. She has three more months on the house lease before she can move to a more affordable apartment.
Joan came to GraceWorks for help with her rent, but through tears she revealed she didn’t have enough income to pay the next three rent payments, she didn’t have enough food to feed herself and her daughter, and her daughter didn’t have summer clothes.
GraceWorks’ Neighbor Services was able to give Joan more than the standard pledge for rent, a gas card, a shopping cart full of food and a voucher to obtain clothing from the GraceWorks Thrift Store.
“Thank you so much!!” Joan wrote in a thank you note. “I am so relieved and am able to start May with a little cushion. Thank you!”
