Neighbor Story: Janice Is Thrilled to Get a Unique Food Pantry Item

GraceWorks volunteers and staffers stared at the newest donation to the Food Pantry.

They were looking at cans and cans and cans of sardines, the favorite of 1950s lunches and snacks, but not seen so much these days.

They weren’t sure how popular the item would be for recipients of the pantry’s shopping carts full of groceries, but grateful as always for food donations, they cheerfully put the cans on the shelves.

Janice has three children who each have various food allergies. She always chooses the pantry’s self-select option instead of pre-assembled carts to allow her to carefully choose the foods that wouldn’t trigger an allergic reaction.

She squealed in delight when she saw the sardines.

“There are so few things the kids can eat, but they can have this one,” she said. “They see sardines as a treat.”

Janice’s joy captivated pantry volunteers, who proceeded to add several boxes to her cart.

“It’s a God thing,” one volunteer said.

Indeed.

The donor must have been inspired by God to know sardines was just the perfect item for the GraceWorks Food Pantry.
